so michele asked about my longest conversation yet. well it was with julio. what a wonderful person. again i have to say i´m one of the luckiest people alive. i have so many dear friends in the world. i´ve met some in NC during college, some in Atlanta during my short time there and more in SF. these are not mere friends, these are people i was meant to meet. people i have a solid bonding relationship with because we are of kindred spirits. now i come to xela, guatemala and i find another such friend. it brings tears to my eyes to know i´m this fortunate.Â
so, julio and i sat down with a little vino and had the best time. he´s a teacher at another school here in xela so he knows just how fast to speak to me and exactly what to ask to encourage me to speak in spanish. we also had a lot of fun toying with english and spanish back and forth. the idea of a spang-lish dictionary came up.
sorry to say though, that is the end of that. tomorrow i leave for belize to meet the bestests man in the world (pete) for christmas and new years. when i return, julio will be gone for a visit with his partner in manchester, england for six months.Â
adios mi amigo. go with god.
okay, so matt thought it was a sign of the apocalypse that i was starting a blog. i have news for you. apocalypse is NOW. i just gave someone tech help on flickr.com and yahoo. others are asking for help because they see the snazzy set up pete set up for me before i left. hows that for a change? you know youre in a third world country when kevin sawyers is the tech expert. help us all.

Had a nice sunday morning walk about Xels and took a series of shots of all the MULTIPLE locks on the doors. nice light from the harsh morning sun coming in at a nice stong angle. make sure to catch the rest of the series on the flickr connection [photos] on the left.
thanks and love more comments on here.

here´s one of the artsy shots from the long ride home from the beach. took a series of shots of electrical or phone poles. love how the fog was rolling along after the hard rain a few miles back. the heat of the volcanos heats up the water and fog just happens.
take it in. it was a pivotal point in this trip for me.
of course i keep having those all the time.Â
keep your eyes open for another series of shots called Bondage
left to right, 6´6¨canadian guy named justin; local guatemalan spanish teacher Edy; Micheal the Swiss guy and on the far right is Dana (the sweety that reminds me of Katy Berry and they have GOT to meet……;O) ) just one of many great pix from a long day of ruin viewing and beach dwelling. the ride home was a time of reflexion. you can see that in my next blog entry.
smooches,

so here i am not even through my third week of study and im kicking myself in the head for not knowing how to speak spanish. i know its crazy but its the way i tick apparently. my maestro says my written grammer is almost perfect, my pronunciation makes these people weep its so good but i just cant bring myself to actually speak the language. ive heard of eye-hand and eye-foot coordination but who knew about brain-boca? i know it will happen. i couldnt understand a single word coming out of anyones mouth when i arrived and now i can pick up the odd word or two. its coming but its like pulling teeth. i so wanted to impress pete when we meet in belize on 12/23 and im sure hell act impressed but i know where i am. it was up in the air for a while weither i would return to Xela for more study or go somewhere else to study. im definately coming back here to continue. its a fine school with very profession staff and maestros. id recommend it to anyone.
so, if anyone wants to come to guacamole for a visit ill be in Xela till 12/23 and then in belize for a week. back to xela from 01/03 – 01/19 or so. THEN maybe Equador for a few weeks of more spanish study and adventure in the forests and volcanoes and MAYBE Galapagoes Islands. SHUT UP!!! its a little expensive to get there from the main land but i think it may be worth it. i dont know if i can bring myself to scuba dive there though. pete would hate me for sure. supposed to be ABSOLUTE heaven. Rick and Randy have any comments here? anyway, so thats what im a thinkin at the moment. if anyone has other suggestions about when and where to go and what to see im all spanish ears.
smooches,

here’s a little side trip from Xela.
Chichicastenango is SUPPOSED to be a 2hr ride from Xela but because of traffic and road work it took 3.5hrs. no big deal. lots to look at and be afraid of once we got there so all was well. i keep thinking much of guatemala looks like what the world would after a nuclear fall out. if that’s the case then this would be the capital. that said, there was much beauty everywhere as well.
take a look for yourself. i have to confess these pictures don’t tell the whole story. there are some things you just don’t take pix of like 7yr old boys with hands blackened by working as a shoe shine boy now eating what little he had with his black hands.
OR the drunk man that had fallen down the church steps now with a bloody head trying to right himself. not a single person hesitated to help. as a tourist you’re caught between wanting to help, feeling you’re being suckered into something and thinking that it may not be the right thing to do if the locals aren’t doing anything.
who’s to say.
